Thanks Mary. He is a beautiful big boy this one. Hibernating peacefully right now, I would expect.

enigma and haddock, thanks ... I was a few feet away ... just a little bit of zoom, not for fear of the snake, but so as not to disturb him ... he's in "ambush" position, waiting for a creature to walk the log and become his meal ... he's alone ... haddock, I'm afraid of sharks but not snakes ... must be what we know and are familiar with ... well, it's not that I don't respect the potential danger of venomous ones if they are put in a defensive spot and not that I don't feel the adrenaline then ... just that they are fairly predictible ... and the Timber Rattler in particular is usually very docile. I've stood close enough to them, inadvertently, to have their tongue flicking my boot, and not been bitten. Not that I'm Steve Irwin or Jeff Corwin, or a number of other names less known ...

beautiful! i've never seen a rattle snake in real life, but i've seen copperheads.

i don't know why people fear snakes. i never did (i'm not stupid though, wouldn't touch a dangerous one)

BUT don't get me started on bugs. i'm even afraid of ants......

Most all of nature works beautifully when it's left the hell alone. It's the human factor that tends to mess everything up. With the brain power we have it's amazing how often we destroy what we should admire.

I love snakes, just a tad afraid my dog will get bit since we hike every day. So far, so good. Sometimes other hikers kill snakes - even nonpoisonous ones - and I find them, headless. It makes me so sad. I've seen quite a few rattlers and I love to see them. Snakes are cool. They don't come after you, they prefer to be left alone and I'm sure they slither out of our way all the time & we don't even know it. Where did you see that beauty? I usually spot babies but one day we all saw a big one eating a baby bunny... we all were horrified at first... then we all moved in with interest. It's fascinating to watch (even if fairly disturbing).

See what happens when you show a nature nerd a pic like that!
